James Kirkwood, his widowed mother and three brothers were part of the Willie Handcart Company. James' responsibility was to care for his 4-year-old brother, Joseph. As they traversed Rocky Ridge in a snow storm and bitter cold wind, Joseph was too weary to walk and had to be carried. They traveled 15 miles in 27 hours. After their arrival at Rock Creek, James collapsed and died of exposure.
